In a city where competition is as fierce as the coffee is strong, New York’s small business owners face an ever-evolving challenge: standing out in a crowded marketplace. These days, that visibility is increasingly defined not by your storefront, but by your digital presence.

To help tackle that challenge head-on, the Greenwich Village Chelsea Chamber of Commerce (GVCCC) is partnering with local startup Huzza World to host a free, in-person workshop aimed squarely at helping NYC’s independent businesses harness the power of digital tools.

Titled “Essential Digital Skills for Independent Business Owners”, the event will take place at the revitalized Pier 57 in Manhattan - a fitting venue for a conversation about innovation and community.

Supporting NYC’s Independent Spirit

From fashion boutiques in SoHo to coffee shops in Harlem and restaurants in Brooklyn, independent businesses are the beating heart of New York City. But without the right digital strategy, even the most beloved neighborhood brand risks being overlooked.

That’s where this workshop comes in.

📅 Date: June 5th, 2025

📍 Location: Pier 57 - Oyster Classroom, Chelsea

🕙 Time: 5:30PM - 7:30PM EDT

The interactive session will be led by Vydimantas Baltrusaitis, founder of Huzza World. Known as “Vydi” to most, he brings more than a decade of experience driving digital and data transformations at companies like Marks & Spencer and Tesco. Now based in NYC, he’s focused on empowering the city’s small business community to thrive in an increasingly online world.

Too many amazing businesses in this city aren’t reaching their potential - not because of their product or service, but because they’re invisible online”, says Vydi. “This session is about changing that”.

What You’ll Learn

The workshop is designed to be hands-on and practical, with tips and tools attendees can implement immediately, regardless of their budget or tech skills.

Highlights include:

  • Creating an Effective Online Presence: Learn how to build (or improve) your website, Google profile, and social media so people can actually find you.

  • SEO Fundamentals: Discover how to boost your ranking on search engines and bring more local customers through your doors.

  • Launching Paid Ads on a Budget: Learn how to run targeted Google and Meta ads, even with just $5 a day.

  • Making the Most of Free Channels: Explore high-impact, low-cost tools like Google Maps, Instagram Reels, and email marketing.

Whether you're launching your first business or looking to modernize an established one, the workshop is geared toward real NYC entrepreneurs navigating real-world challenges.

Why Digital Skills Matter More Than Ever

Many local businesses still rely on traditional marketing - flyers, walk-ins, word-of-mouth. While these methods still have value, today’s customers are online first.

Here are three deep dives into why mastering digital is no longer optional for NYC small businesses:

1. Digital Discovery Drives Foot Traffic

In New York City, where thousands of businesses operate within just a few square blocks, getting found online is critical.

Google research shows that:

  • 76% of people who search for something nearby on their phone visit a business within 24 hours;

  • 28% of those searches lead to a purchase.

That means if someone searches “best vegan bakery near me” or “tailor in the West Village” and your business doesn’t show up, you may as well not exist.

From setting up a proper Google Business Profile to encouraging online reviews, visibility starts with getting the digital basics right.

2. SEO is the New Storefront

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) may sound technical, but at its core, it's about ensuring your business appears when people search for the products or services you offer.

Local SEO specifically can help small shops compete with big-box stores by:

  • Improving search engine rankings;

  • Driving organic (free) traffic;

  • Increasing credibility with customers.

For instance, if you own a boutique in Williamsburg that sells handmade jewelry, and your site uses the right keywords like “handcrafted jewelry Brooklyn”, you’ll be much more likely to pop up when someone searches nearby.

3. Paid Ads Aren’t Just for Big Brands

Gone are the days when digital advertising required huge budgets. With tools like Google Ads and Meta Business Suite, small businesses can:

  • Target hyper-local audiences;

  • Promote time-sensitive offers;

  • Retarget website visitors;

  • Run click-to-call or directions ads.

For example, a West Village florist can run a $20 Instagram Story campaign before Mother’s Day, targeting people within a 1-mile radius. It’s direct, measurable, and cost-effective - if done right. At the workshop, you’ll learn how to design simple, successful ads that get results.

The Man Behind the Mission

Huzza World’s founder, Vydimantas Baltrusaitis, spent over ten years helping some of the UK’s largest retail and consumer brands build out their digital infrastructure. Now, he’s bringing that experience to the streets of New York - literally. Through Huzza World, he’s already worked with dozens of small businesses to launch loyalty programs, improve visibility, and boost revenue.

I want to help independent businesses access the same kind of digital power that big corporations take for granted”, Vydi says. “And I want to make it simple, not scary”.

Pier 57: The Perfect Venue

Hosting this session at Pier 57 is more than just convenient - it’s symbolic. The once-abandoned maritime structure has been reborn as a center for creativity, learning, and community. With sweeping views of the Hudson River and a layout that encourages collaboration, it’s the perfect space for business owners to gather, learn, and connect.

Final Thoughts: A New Chapter for NYC’s Independent Businesses

New York City’s small businesses are resilient. They’ve weathered rent hikes, supply chain challenges, and shifting consumer habits. Now, digital transformation is the next frontier, and this workshop is a crucial step toward embracing it. With expert guidance, a supportive local network, and practical tools, independent entrepreneurs can take control of their online future and thrive in the most competitive market in the world. So whether you’re a seasoned restaurateur in Hell’s Kitchen or just launched your vintage denim brand in Bushwick, this workshop offers something valuable for you.
